About

Sound engineers, lighting operators, technical supervisors and stage managers… who does what?

Behind every live artist is a whole host of people who make concerts and shows possible. In this panel, we’ll find out who they are and talk about their career paths. If you’d like to get started in the live music sector or find out more about these professions, this round table is for you!

Speakers:
Steve Demuth
Dating from his graduation in IT, he had his first experience engaging as a lighting designer at the age of 18. He has been working in the event industry for 15 years now. During his career, he managed the lighting production for several bands like Eternal Tango, Mutiny on the Bounty, The Disliked, Tuys, Austinn and Angel at My Table. In 2014, he discovered his passion for the lighting concepts of theatrical productions while directing the lights for, stage director, Claude Mangen’s plays named “’Äiskal” (2014) and “Kveldulf” (2015, outdoor theatre). Then, he began to work for the Grand Theatre in Luxembourg as a lighting designer committing himself to the theatre including opera as well as dance. In 2017, he created the light concept for Max Claessen’s piece called “Tom auf dem Lande”. He continued to be the lighting designer for other plays like “Versetzung” by Mark Claessen, “Driven” (Dance) by Jean-Guillaume Weis as well as “Süden” by Thierry Mousset. In 2021, Steve could show his skills and talents with Alfred de Musset’s piece called “On ne badine pas avec l’amour” earning him a nomination for the Letzebuerger Theaterpräisser 2021 (“Luxemburgish theatre awards”). From 2022 he started working as freelance lighting designer continuing his passion for theatre, opera and dance and trying to immerge these designs into the concert industry, as for the release show of the band Don Piano.
 

Elmar Fank
Elmar started playing the trumpet when he was 8 years old. After that he started playing drums, e – bass and doing vocals. He founded his first band in 1997. Since then he had the pleasure to play in different bands creating original songs and doing covers.

After his first training as educator for handicaped people, he worked with physically and mentally disabled people for 8 years. From 1997-2006 Elmar organized concerts and planned Events for DJs or bands. Organizing events and making music by himself and with his band were an integral part of his life. So he decided to make music his career, trained as event manager and founded his own music & event agency: FANKevents GmbH.

Between 2006 and 2013 he got to work at Rockhal concers through his agency. He then completed additional training to become a master in event technology and is since 2013 employed as a technical production manager at Rockhal.

Jaakes Hoffmann
Jaakes Hoffmann, born in 1987, showed a passion for amplified music from a young age. By the age of 10, he was learning drums at the local music school. However, it became clear that his interest lay more in the rock ‘n’ roll stereotype than in practicing classical instruments.At just 13, Jaakes began organizing concerts in collaboration with the youth club from his hometown of Tuntange. These small events gradually evolved into festivals attracting over 5000 spectators. From this initiative, a group of individuals from the youth association formed the asbl Food for Your Senses, which continued to organize various festivals and shows across Luxembourg.

Jaakes served as chairman of the board from 2006 to 2014, after which he assumed responsibility for the technical management of the festival.

In 2008, he completed his education as an educator in Luxembourg and, on the day of his final exam, co-founded his first company, operating a music studio, alongside Charel Stoltz.

In 2011, Jaakes acquired Discolux, a small business providing technical support for events. This venture eventually transformed into Amplitude (formerly Discolux), which now employs 25 staff members.

In 2014, Jaakes, along with Luka Heindrichs and Ben Thommes, took over Decliq and established the café-concert « de Gudde Wëllen. » Since then, the venue has hosted performances by over 700 different artists and groups.

Charles Stoltz 
Charles Stoltz is a Sound Engineer and Producer from Luxembourg. After stops in London and Amsterdam, he went on to build his own recording studio, Holtz Studio in Tuntage. A few years into the job, his customer base keeps growing, always exploring new styles and trying to contribute to his clients’ visions. With the company ‘Amplitude’ he works as a live sound engineer on various projects, festivals and tours. As a musician, you can see him on stage with the band MAD FOX and Don Piano.

Lisa Burke
Lisa Burke is an experienced broadcaster having spent the bulk of her career presenting live television with Sky News, plus BBC, Channel 4, Fox News, many other Sky channels, RTE (Ireland) and RTL (Luxembourg). Her reporting has covered national and international assignments, documentaries and radio.

 In Luxembourg, Lisa co-created RTL Today which has now become the biggest English news platform in the country. Now, she hosts and produces a weekly radio show (also available with video) and podcast: ‘The Lisa Burke Show’.

 Lisa is in high demand as a host and moderator, covering TED talks, all Luxembourg Space Agency work, finance, health, entrepreneurship, tech, science, European Institution events and many more. She is a public speaking coach, and launched the first Presenting & Debating Society at the University of Luxembourg. Additionally, Lisa is a sought-after voice-over artist.

 Whilst living in Abu Dhabi for two years, Lisa wrote for The National newspaper.

 Other writing includes children’s science books. Lisa has been a science consultant and author with Dorling Kindersley since 2005. She studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, gaining a double first. Her specialism was chemistry.

 Lisa is on the Cambridge University Communications Working Group. She is also a board member for Angel Aid Cares, a Californian-based foundation raising aid for the care-givers of children with rare disease.

 Lisa is a trained classical singer and pianist. She has two daughters.
