TikTok Killed the Video Star?

Music videos have long been central to how music is seen, understood, and remembered — shaping artist identities, defining cultural moments, and transforming songs into lasting visual experiences. With the rise of social media and vertical, scroll-based viewing, attention spans are shorter, narratives are compressed into seconds, and songs often break through via fragments rather than fully realised visual works. Instead of premiering as singular, high-impact releases, many visuals now circulate as loops, hooks, and algorithm-friendly moments designed for constant consumption and reinterpretation.

In this panel, local video directors, music artists and artistic directors come together to explore how social media and platforms like TikTok and Instagram are reshaping — or reinventing — the format, and what its role and position might be within an artist’s body of work and career. Are these platforms (really) fragmenting the traditional music video, or are they opening new pathways for discovery and experimentation? How does the shift toward bite-sized, algorithm-driven content impact storytelling, budgets, and long-term career development?

Bringing together perspectives from both behind and in front of the camera, this session asks a timely question: in a world of infinite scroll, what is the future of the music video — and who gets to define it?

Speakers:

Maz Univerze (artist)

Maz Univerze emerged from a small town, where the blueprint for a traditional life was laid in his cradle back in 1999. It took time for his beautiful, gory poetry to escape the drawer and for the pride flag to unfurl between metal posters. Today, his thoughts erupt in a raw fusion of alternative rap metal, soaked in emo-rock and metal influences. He mixes skillful rap with distorted screams and melodic hooks; crafting a sound that is as dark as it is hopeful. When Maz and his two bandmates take the stage, they turn the crowd into a single, powerful marionette limb, a collective beast rising up against social injustice and urging every soul to embrace their shadows as much as their light. This electrifying live energy has broken out of secrecy, earning him slots at major festivals like Sziget Festival, Rock For People Festival and ESNS, as well as the Best Live Performer award at the Luxembourg Music Awards. Maz Univerze recently released his second full-length album, Little Prince (March 2025), hailed by fans as his strongest work to date and already his second-most streamed project within a matter of months.

Rari Matei (filmmaker and visual artist)

Rari is a 25 year-old Romanian-Portuguese genderqueer filmmaker and visual artist, based in Luxembourg. She directed several music videos for artists such as MAZ, Francis of Delirium, and C’est Karma, all supported by Film Fund Luxembourg. Although their background lies in visual communication, Rari Matei’s path has naturally evolved toward film. Their debut short film Oizys premiered at the Luxembourg City Film Festival in March 2024.

Simon Krawies (artistic director)

Simon Krawies is a French Artistic Director and founder of Agence Onze, a creative studio specializing in audiovisual production and brand storytelling. For over 10 years, he has been helping brands, institutions and cultural organizations craft visual narratives adapted to the evolving landscape of digital platforms. His work sits at the intersection of strategy and production, exploring how formats, attention, and storytelling shift in the age of social media. In 2025 alone, the content produced by his studio generated more than 15 million views across platforms.
